The organized unit of the United Methodist Women, or UMW, is a community whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ. The UMW serves to develop creative and supportive fellowship. This group also expands concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. Membership in United Methodist Women is open to all women.

A sample of the mission work of UMW includes:

  • Participation in International as well as local ministries
  • United Methodist Children's Home in Selma, Alabama
  • Department of Human Resources in Limestone County (foster children)
  • Hospice of Limestone County
  • Limestone County Churches Involved (LCCI)
  • Bereaved Family Meals
  • Upper Sand Mountain Ministry
  • Henderson Settlement Ministry and Red Bird Mission Education Program (Campbell's Soup labels)
  • Ministry to nursing homes with monthly ice cream socials
  • Writing supportive letters to our missionaries


There are four UMW groups at Athens First United Methodist Church. Interested in joining a group? Please contact our office (office@athensfumc.org) or call 256-232-2020 for direction on how to get in touch with one of the group leaders. The current tentative UMW schedule is as follows:

  • UMW General Meeting (all groups) - Meets monthly, first Monday at 9:30 am
  • Hightower Group - Meets monthly, 2nd Monday at 2 pm
  • Morning Group - Meets monthly, 2nd Tuesday at 9:30 am
  • Sundae Group - Meets quarterly, Sundays at 4 pm
  • UMW Task Force - Meets as a need arises


In addition to the general and group meetings, the UMW annual calendar including multiple unique events throughout the year as well as these standing events:

  • UMW Winter Breakfast, Fall Fellowship Dinner, and December Covered Dish Luncheon
  • Call to Prayer and Self-Denial
  • Turkey Dinner and Bake Sale as a fundraiser for missions
